The Shanxi Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology recently published new excavation information about an ancient tomb with a mural named Figures Under Trees from the Tang Dynasty (618-907) in Taiyuan, Shanxi province.

The tomb, the latest mural tomb to be found in the Taiyuan region, holds significant importance for studies of the period, when such murals were popular in Taiyuan, the institute said.

The tomb was discovered during the reconstruction of an old road in the city in 2018, and archaeologists subsequently excavated it and conducted detailed research.

It consists of a sloping brick chamber — a single room. The tomb entrance, corridor, all four walls, the ceiling and the coffin bed are all adorned with murals.

According to the tomb epitaph, the tomb owner died in the year 736 at the age of 63 and was buried together with his wife.
