For the terminally ill, hospice care helps vanquish pain and anxiety for patients and their families. It accepts the inevitability of death and helps the dying leave the world with dignity. Hospice — also known as palliative care — allows peace and love to settle in before the final breath is drawn.

In Yangquan, Shanxi province, Eric Miller, a 52-year-old American doctor, began providing hospice care in 2013 with his wife, Li Ruoxia, to relieve the suffering of terminally ill patients. He visits villages to comfort the dying and help them leave the world gently.

China Daily video journalists talked with Miller and his wife to explore why they pioneered hospice care in Shanxi province.
